Sadao WatanabeJapanese, 1913 - 1996

Trained as a textile dyer, Watanabe Sadao was part of the folk craft movement in 20th-century Japan. For his prints, he used a stencil-resist technique common in traditional Okinawan textile dying. Uniquely among Japanese print artists, almost all of Watanabe’s prints depict biblical stories or themes.
