John Young HunterBritish, Scottish, active in America, 1874 - 1955

John Young Hunter was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1874, to an artistic family. His father was a member of England’s Royal Academy, his mother an accomplished pianist. John became an accomplished portrait painter in his own right, exhibiting his work in Paris, and at the Tate Gallery in London, until a fascination with the American West lured him to Taos, New Mexico, in 1912. Young-Hunter would become a fixture in the Taos art colony, painting the Native Americans of the region, as well as western genre scenes and floral still lifes. He would return to New York during the winters to execute his exquisite portraits, which were very highly sought.
