Thomas DoughtyAmerican, 1793 - 1856

Doughty was born in Philadelphia on July 19, 1793. He had little or no formal training as a painter, looking to European landscape traditions such as the aesthetic of Claude Lorrain and the picturesque for inspiration in his work. He was elected to Academician of the Pennsylvania Academy in 1824. He was best known for romantic visions of the mainly rural American landscape. His style is considered a precursor to the Hudson River School. Doughty died in 1856 in New York City.
