Samuel RichardsAmerican, 1853 - 1893

Richards was born in Spencer, Indiana in 1853, and had little or no formal training as an artist. He went to Munich, Germany in 1880 with a group of fellow Indiana painters to study. He returned from Munich due to tuberculosis in 1891 and soon after went to Denver, Colorado on the advice of his doctor for the curative powers of the mountain air. He enjoyed modest success as a painter during his lifetime, exhibiting his painting Blissful Hours (DAI 1953.16) at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. He died as a result of related complications in Denver on November 30, 1893.
