De Scott Evans

De Scott Evans was born on March 28, 1847 in Boston, Indiana (in Wayne County, near Richmond) and studied art with Alfred Beaugureau in Cincinnati. In the 1870s, Evans traveled to Paris to study painting with Adolphe William Bouguereau. He returned to teach for a time at the Cleveland Academy of Fine Arts. In 1887, he left the Midwest for New York. He was known during his lifetime for portraits of women, genre scenes of domestic interiors and landscapes; he is best known for his trompe l'oeil still lifes, most of which he signed with pseudonyms. Evans, along with his wife and three daughters, died July 4, 1898 when the ocean liner they were taking to Paris sank.
