Charles Soule, Sr.American, 1809 - 1869

Charles Soule was a portrait painter who was born in Freeport, Maine on September 2, 1809. He went to live in Chillicothe with an uncle named J.T. Moore, who was himself an artist. As a young man, he moved to the Dayton area and became a popular portrait painter. Soule traveled throughout Ohio and other major cities in the Midwest as an itinerant portraitist. Three of his children, Charles Jr, Octavia and Clara, became painters as well. He died in 1869.
