BiographyBorn in on July 23, 1909 in Harlem, New York, Lewis studied art at Columbia University, and taught art at various institutions in New York. In his early career, his work dealt with themes of social realism. By the 1940s, he began exploring abstraction, and came to be associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement. Lewis' work was recognized and lauded by his contemporaries, however, after his death, his work received little attention until the late 1980s.(Source: AskArt.com)
