Edward Edmondson was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1830. He may have taken classes at some point with Charles Soule, Sr., a noted Dayton portrait painter. Edmondson worked as a portrait painter early in his career and later painted detailed images of native plants and still lives. While in Dayton, Edmondson shared studio space on Third Street with the photographer Thomas Walker Cridland (1811-1891). Edmondson lived in Dayton until he moved with his family to Santa Barbara, California in November 1880. He died January 5, 1884 in Richmond, Indiana.
