Marvin Lowe

Born in Brooklyn in 1922, Marvin Lowe graced the world with his artistry as a musician and printmaker, and with his warmth as a loving teacher and family man. His tenor sax days with Woody Herman and Artie Shaw and his service on the battleship Arkansas in W II were followed by advanced music studies at Juilliard, a BA in English Literature at Brooklyn College and a MFA in printmaking from the University of Iowa. His teaching and professional career as a visual artist included faculty positions at Bucknell and most notably Indiana University where for 24 years he worked with colleague, Rudy Pozzatti, to build one of the premier printmaking programs in the U.S... Lowe’s prints have been shown in over 200 national and international exhibitions, and can be found in over 80 permanent museum, university and corporate collections, most notably the British Museum, Japan Print Association (Tokyo), the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institute, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Throughout his illustrious career as a musician and printmaker, he remained a caring husband and father. His marriage in 1949 to Juel Watkins, professional dancer, singer and Vaudeville performer, was blessed with the 1955 birth of daughter Melissa. With the death of his wife in 2002, Lowe moved to Tucson to be with his daughter, Melissa, son-in-law Jory, and granddaughter Claire. There he continued to live and work in his studio until his death.
