After graduating from Tainan Normal School in Formosa (now Taiwan), he taught in that country for 13 years before being repatriated to Japan after World War II. He then started to study stencilling techniques and to exhibit with the Japan Print Association, which awarded him a prize in 1949. In 1956 he graduated from the Western painting department of Musashino University, near Tokyo, turned to woodblock printing and went on to exhibit with the Kokugakai (National Painting Society), which awarded him a prize in 1959. From 1960 he exhibited regularly at the Tokyo International Print Biennale and in 1967 took part in the São Paulo Biennale.
