Joel Whitaker
Joel Whitaker graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL in 1988 with a Masters in Fine Art. While at Florida State he studied photography with Robert Fichter and George Blakely. In 1989 he assumed a one-year visiting faculty position at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa where he worked with James Snitzer and Peter Feldstein.
In 1993 he joined the faculty of the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, where he currently holds the rank of Associate Professor and serves as Chair of the Department of Visual Arts. He has remained active in photography through his teaching, ongoing study of the medium, development of photographic projects, and the pursuit of exhibition outlets. Some of his notable exhibitions include: Wittenberg University, Springfield, OH; Otterbein College, Westerville, OH; the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton, OH; the Aronoff Center, Cincinnati, OH; Davidson College, Davidson NC. In 2006, his work was selected for inclusion in Photography Now/One Hundred Portfolios - An International Survey of Contemporary Photography, at Wright State University, Fairborn, OH.
His work is in several public collections including the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH; Otterbein College, Westerville, OH; Davidson College, Davidson, NC; the Schiffler Foundation, Greenville, OH; the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, Tallahassee, FL; the Kinsey Institute, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Since 1994 he has been included in 32 group and juried exhibitions and 17 one and two person exhibitions. He has been awarded one Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Grant, two Montgomery County Individual Artist Fellowships, and four University of Dayton Summer Research Fellowships.
