A. Horsley HintonEnglish, 1863 - 1908

Horsley Hinton, Alfred (1863-1908), British pictorialist photographer, founder member of the Linked Ring Brotherhood (1892), and editor of Amateur Photographer (1893-1908). Trained in art, he became a journalist, editing the Photographic Art Journal (1887-91) and Photographs of the Year (1892). Hinton managed Ralph Robinson's studio in Guildford (1891-2) and, like Ralph's father H. P. Robinson, advocated manipulation and combination printing (see composite photography) in the darkroom. However, his landscape photographs explored feeling as much as composition. He found inspiration in unpicturesque mudflats at low tide on wintry days. Most of his work was lost after his death.
