Abraham Mignon
Dutch, 1640 - 1679
Painter, watercolourist. Animals, insects, still-lifes (including flowers/fruit), plants.
Abraham Mignon was the pupil of Jacob Marrel at the age of seven. He left for Holland with him around 1659. His teacher in Utrecht was Jan Davidsz de Heem. In 1665, he returned to Frankfurt or Wetzlar and married, and in 1669, he was a member of the St Luke's Guild in Utrecht. In 1676, he was in Frankfurt.
His arrangements of sumptuous bouquets contained strange and surprising effects. He brought them to life by putting all kinds of insects among the thistles, and also used mice, even snakes or more unexpectedly, mushrooms.
