Norman Lundin

American, born 1938
BiographyNorman Lundin was born in Los Angeles, California in 1938 but grew up in Chicago and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at the University of Cincinnati. He paints studies of unoccupied architectural spaces that function as shallow reservoirs of northern atmospheric light. His professional demeanor is slightly incongruous with his unmannered style of conversation. Articulate but reserved, he often concludes his serious commentaries with a broad smile and self-effacing punch line.

Lundin's illusionistic images appear to be careful recordings of actual interiors, objects and lighting effects, but he doesn't work from direct observation. "Illusionism attracts me not so much because it allows me to make imitations of things, but because I can create a convincing image of something that's not there but might have been." He teaches at the University of Washington; his home studio was once a grocery store.
