James Fittler

Born 1758, in London; died 1835, in Turnham Green.

Engraver.

James Fittler enrolled as a student at the Royal Academy in 1778, and became an affiliated engraver in 1800. His finest works include: Lord Howe's Victory, The Battle of the Nile after De Loutherbourg, a Portrait of Benjamin West (President of the Royal Academy from 1792 to 1805) and illustrations for Bell's Theatre, Scotia Depicta after Claude Nattes, and the Illustrated Bible. Fittler was an accomplished burin engraver; he excelled in the depiction of effects of light
