Dmitry BaltermantsRussian, born in Poland, 1912 - 1990

Baltermants (Russian, born in Poland, 1912-1990) was the Soviet Union's leading photographer, known mainly for his battleground photographs during WWII. Afterwrds, he served as chief photo editor for Ogonyuk Magazine, considered the USSR's equivalent to Life or Look Magazine. Baltermants's photos span the era from Stalin to Gorbachev, from WW-II to Glasnost and Perestroika. His photographs are included in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago, IL), Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Metropolitan Museum of Arts, among others.
