Barbara Kasten

American, born 1936
BiographyTrained as a painter and textile artist, Kasten received an MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts (1970) and a BFA from the University of Arizona (1959). In 1971, she traveled to Poland on a Fulbright Scholarship to work with noted-sculptor Magdalena Abakanowicz. In the 1980s, she began to construct installations specifically produced for the camera. Working for more than 40 years, images have become increasingly abstract. In 2015, Kasten was given the first career survey of her work, entitled "Barbara Kasten: Stages" at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia.
