Adelaide Hanscom (American, 1875–1931) studied art and design first at the University of California and later at San Francisco’s Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (now SF Art Institute). Additionally, she took private photography lessons and may have learned printing techniques from Anne Brigman—a member of the Photo-Secessionist group, founded by Alfred Stieglitz. Hanscom would also become a member of the Photo-Secessionist and an advocate for pictorialism.
