Eunshin H. KhangAmerican, born in Korea, 1948

Eunshin H. Khang is a Korean-born American artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. After receiving a B.F.A. (1970) and M.A. (1972) from Ewha Woman’s University in South Korea, she completed her M.F.A. at the University of Cincinnati (1986). She has participated in 13 solo exhibitions and 70 group exhibitions in both South Korea and across the United States, including one at the DAI, The 1987 Ohio Selection: Graphics. From 1989–1999 she taught at the Miami University School of Art. Additionally, she has received several awards and honors, including from the Ohio Arts Council.

Artist’s statement: “As an Asian American artist practicing over forty years in Cincinnati, I’ve had the privilege to experience Asian art as well as American/Western art firsthand. Over the years, I expanded my paintings from using Asian calligraphic brushstrokes to painting abstract images. Although in museums artworks are categorized by cultures, regions, and time, I feel that at this globalized time paintings that show the merged cultures are also important. I feel my paintings are a good example of a happy marriage between the two cultures in terms of image, medium, as well as support. Fusing two cultures, there are the Western mark makings with shape-oriented surfaces as well as the obvious use of Eastern brush strokes.”
