Eunshin H. Khang is a Korean-born American artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. After receiving a B.F.A. She has participated in 13 solo exhibitions and 70 group exhibitions in both South Korea and across the United States, including one at the DAI, The 1987 Ohio Selection: Graphics. From 1989–1999 she taught at the Miami University School of Art. Additionally, she has received several awards and honors, including from the Ohio Arts Council.
Artist’s statement: “As an Asian American artist practicing over forty years in Cincinnati, I’ve had the privilege to experience Asian art as well as American/Western art firsthand. Over the years, I expanded my paintings from using Asian calligraphic brushstrokes to painting abstract images. Although in museums artworks are categorized by cultures, regions, and time, I feel that at this globalized time paintings that show the merged cultures are also important. I feel my paintings are a good example of a happy marriage between the two cultures in terms of image, medium, as well as support. Fusing two cultures, there are the Western mark makings with shape-oriented surfaces as well as the obvious use of Eastern brush strokes.”
