Dr. Ronald Y. NakasoneAmerican, born 1943

Dr. Ronald Nakasone is a master of Japanese calligraphy and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, including in San Francisco, Kyoto, Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, Bangkok and Santiago. He is also an accomplished scholar, producing more than 150 scholarly publications on Buddhist doctrine, ethics, aesthetics, aging and spirituality, and Okinawan Studies. His book The Appeal of Ambiguity: Cognitive Paradigms of Huayan Buddhist Thought is scheduled to be released in 2022.

Born and raised in Hawai`i, he studied at University of Hawai`i, Ryūkoku University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Harvard University. He received special recognition from the Thai Royal family for contributions to Buddhist studies in 2008 and was the recipient of the 2011 Sarlo Excellence in Teaching from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.

In addition to his art and scholarly pursuits, Dr. Nakasone is an ordained Pure Land Buddhist priest and an active member in Asian American communities in the San Francisco Bay Area.
