Hashiguchi Goyō

Born 1881; died 1921.

Painter, draughtsman, engraver (wood). Figures, nudes, portraits, genre scenes, interiors with figures.

Shin-hanga.

Hashiguchi Goyo did not always use strictly traditional methods, but his work is imbued with the spirit of tradition. As a result, he produced ukiyo-e engravings (images from the floating world) and was part of the Shin-hanga (New Engraving) School, which had its origins with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo at the start of the 20th century. He generally depicted scenes with women, which he treated in a discreetly erotic manner.
