Joseph T. MooreAmerican, 1796 - 1854

Joseph Thoits Moore (1796-1854) - Joseph Thoits Moore was a portrait, sign, and ornamental painter, born North Yarmouth Maine, March 6, 1796, a son of Tobias Moore, a schoolmaster. In 1816 he came with his brother Samuel to Chillicothe (Ross), reportedly to act as guardian for his orphaned nephew, Charles Soule. The Moore brothers opened a chair-making shop there, but the partnership was dissolved in 1823. In 1824 and 1825 Joseph was associated with William Y Emmett in a "fancy painting" business; he then went to Philadelphia, presumably in search of professional instruction in the fine arts. Back in Chillicothe by November 1826, Moore advertised for the first time as a painter of portraits exclusively. During the next three years he visited Dayton (Montgomery), Lancaster (Fairfield), and Lebanon (Warren) Ohio, leaving a number of portraits in each town, particularly in Lancaster.

Around 1830 he settled with his wife and three children in Montgomery, Alabama where he opened a portrait studio and gave instruction in drawing and painting. Moore painted more than 400 portraits before his death. He died from yellow fever in Montgomery, October 17, 1854. Harriett Newell Moore Hosea, a miniaturist, was his daughter. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery. [I imagine this is in Alabama]
