Jack Warren Welpott

American, 1923 - 2007
BiographyJack Welpott served in the US Air Force in the South Pacific from 1943–1946 and was able to attend college through the GI Bill. Welpott taught at San Francisco State College (now University) and according to the Center for Creative Photography, “In the early 1960s there were few photography courses or graduate programs offered so Welpott pioneered individual courses and a graduate program, and taught one of the first history of photography courses at the college level.” Welpott worked most often in the documentary style and preferred large format. Welpott’s work is in collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum (New York, NY), International Museum of Photography/George Eastman House (Rochester, NY), Art Institute of Chicago, Center of Creative Photography (Tucson, AZ), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris). Welpott is not currently represented in the collection and as a veteran of the US armed forces would contribute to our IDEA work. His black and white photographs fit into our collection of modern photography, especially in the documentary tradition.
