LAWSON LITTLE WITH HIS UNCLE RAYMOND HUGHES AFTER A DAY FISHING ON THE TENNESSEE RIVER’S PICKWICK DAM. AS A CHILD, HE WOULD SPEND HIS SUMMERS IN TENNESSEE ON HIS GRANDMOTHER’S FARM.
THE DECADE OF MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY IS THE LAST OF LAWSON’S TRADITIONAL BLACK & WHITE AND COLOR FILM / PRINT PROCESSING TECHNIQUE. PRESENTLY, AFTER 40 YEARS OF DARKROOM PROCESSES, I SCAN MY PAST 35 MM, MEDIUM FORMAT FILM, AND PRINTS IN HIGH RES. DIGITAL SCANNERS. THE FILM CAMERAS USED IN THE MUSIC WORK WERE THE HASSELBLAB SWC, LEICA M3 WITH A COUPLED 35mm RANGE FINDER, 35MM NIKONS, 6x7 PENTAX, AND A 6x7 MAMIYA 7 RANGE FINDER. THE EARLY LIGHTING WAS A BARE-TUBE ON CAMERA FLASH TO REPLICATE THE LIGHT OF 1940s AND 50s PHOTOJOURNALISM. THE BACKSTAGE LIGHTING WAS USUALLY A SINGLE 64” UMBRELLA WITH AN 800ws STROBE POWER PACK. THE BLACK AND WHITE FILM WAS TRI-X AND TMAX 400 PROCESSED IN D-76. THE COLOR AND BLACK AND WHITE PRINTS AND FILM WERE ALL HAND PROCESS BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER.
