BiographyDr. Rosalyn Gerstein’s interdisciplinary background includes a bachelor of fine arts degree and a master’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, incorporating studio work with Harry Callahan in both the undergraduate and graduate departments of photography. She also has a doctorate in Communication Technology and Culture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, involving research in interactive documentaries at the MIT Media Lab.

Gerstein’s work spans a thirty-five year career depicting a wide range of subjects, from people living on the Boston Common to carnival performers in New England fairgrounds. Her intimate portraits explore identity in American culture and capture insights into personal experiences, combining the photographer’s perspective and the subject’s story. She has lectured, published and exhibited throughout the United States, and taught intermittently. She is a recipient of numerous regional grants, including both the Massachusetts and Vermont Councils on the Arts, and corporate funding from Polaroid. She lives in Kirkland, Washington with her family.
