BiographyMaster etcher and artist Louis Orr (1879-1961) was born in Hartford, CT, but spent many years living in Paris as well as in North Carolina. Louis Orr's father, uncle and grandfather were engravers and printers and despite their efforts to discourage him from the difficult life of an artist, Louis Orr was inspired to study at the Hartford Art School. He went on to the Art Student's League on a scholarship, and then on to Paris to study at the Academie Julian. It was in Paris that Louis Orr met and married his wife, a student of the late Jean Paul Laurens. Also while in Paris, Louis Orr met North Carolinian Robert Lee Humber and together they envisioned a large series of etchings of North Carolina landmarks.
