BiographyJohnson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 27, 1919. He studied art at the Minneapolis Institute School of Art, the St Paul Art School and the Art Institute of Chicago, and with Hans Hofmann. Johnson was Adjunct Professor of Painting at Yale University from 1964-1989, and Director of Graduate Painting School of Art and Architecture from 1969-1974. During a period in which painting was becoming increasingly non-figural, Johnson continued to make the human figure central in his work. His paintings often explore the individual in relation to issues of urbanism and anonymity.(Source: Grove Dictionary of Art Online)
