George Hetzel

BiographyHetzel was born in Alsace, France, in 1826. His family immigrated to the United States and settled in Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania. Hetzel went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy in Germany to study art. He returned to the United States in 1849 and began to paint in a manner reflective of his admiration for the Hudson River School. Hetzel is also known for his role in the formation of the Scalp Level School of painting. Scalp Level is an area near Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He traveled there in the summers to paint from the landscape, and took artist friends there as well. Later in his career, Hetzel exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia. He died in Pittsburgh in 1906.Person TypeIndividual
