BiographyJohn Gaines is the most important name in the early history of New Hampshire furniture production and design. Gaines, who was a member of a prominent woodworking family from Ipswich, Massachusetts, settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire during the early eighteenth century, a period of economic expansion. At the time of Gaines' death in 1743, Portsmouth was one of the fastest growing ports in colonial America. Growth and the desire of the city's merchant class to participate in the international consumer revolution created a market for a chair of remarkable vitality and ostentation.
