Lois Fortson- Kirk, born in Memphis, Tennessee, spent her childhood in Memphis, where her parents enrolled her in Fisk University. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree and later attended the Dayton Art Institute, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. She was greatly influenced by sculptor Robert C. Koepnick, whose patience knew no end, and taught her, along with other women, to love working in clay. She has also studied under artist, educator Tess Little, bronze casting under Jim Killy, Eugene Daub, Phillipe Farrar, Abner Cope and Willis "Bing" Davis.
She made a career change from teaching to ministry and later received a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity from United Theology Seminary. She is a retired pastor in the United Methodist Church, West Ohio Conference. Her works are in many public and private collections across the United States;
She currently resides in Centerville, Ohio, working out of her home studio.
