Laura C. Birge was born in Seneca Falls, New York in 1846, and moved with her mother to Dayton as a young woman. She began her training in art with painter Clara Soule at her studio in Dayton. Later she went to New York City, Cincinnati and Munich, Germany to continue her training. Ms. Birge was a primarily a portrait painter. She died in Dayton in 1928, at the age of 82.
