American, born in Cuba, born 1948
BiographyAbelardo Morell was born in Cuba and immigrated to the United States as a teenager. A fine art photographer and professor, Morell’s oeuvre is wide ranging and includes experimentation with photograms, still lifes and camera obscuras. In 1986 he began working in large format and is best known for his photographs turning rooms into camera obscuras to photograph the interior with the outside environment projected upon it. His work is collected in numerous public collections including: Amon Carter Museum (Fort Worth, TX), the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Center for Creative Photography (Tucson, AZ), Cleveland Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Arts, J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles, CA), Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), and Philadelphia Museum of Art. Morell is not currently represented in the DAI collection and would contribute to our IDEA work.
