BiographyLilly Martin Spencer was born in Exeter, England on November 26, 1822, and immigrated with her parents to the United States around 1830. Soon after, her family settled in Marietta, Ohio, and she traveled to Cincinnati to study art and exhibit her paintings. She married Benjamin Spencer in Cincinnati and eventually moved to New York with him to pursue her career. Her œuvre consisted mainly of still lifes and genre scenes of domestic interiors. She also had her works distributed through three popular art unions of the time, the Western Art-Union in Cincinnati, the American Art-Union, and the Cosmopolitan Art-Union in New York. She continued to paint until her death on May 22, 1902 in New York City.Person TypeIndividual
