BiographyWilliam Trost Richards was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 14, 1833. He studied painting and drawing in Philadelphia, possibly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He traveled to Europe in 1855-1856 with William Stanley Haseltine and Alexander Lawrie. Richards studied briefly in Düsseldorf, Germany. On his return to the United States, he began painting landscapes en plein air, drawing in part on his observation of the fidelity to nature in British Pre-Raphaelite paintings. He was a member of the Society for the Advancement of Truth in Art and also an Academician of the National Academy of Design. He traveled to the East Coast to paint seascapes, eventually settled in Newport, Rhode Island, where he lived until his death on November 8, 1905.Person TypeIndividual
