Robert Loftin Newman was born in Richmond, Virginia on November 10, 1827 and spent his childhood in Clarksville, Tennessee. As a young man, he traveled to New York and Paris to study painting. He exhibited at the American Art-Union in New York in 1849, and worked as a portrait painter in Nashville, Tennessee early in his career. Newman served as a Confederate lieutenant in the American Civil War, and evidently worked as a painter in both New York and Nashville after the war. He was primarily known in his later career as a painter of religious subject matter and scenes from literature. He died in New York on March 31, 1912. (Source: Archives of Askart.com)
