Charles Swedlund

American, born 1935

BiographyCharles Swedlund has spent his life equally as a photographer and a teacher. Born (1935) and raised in Chicago, Chuck acquired his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Institute of Design in 1958 and 1961 respectively. His endlessly with film, lenses, paper stock, exposures and chemical processes. After teaching in Chicago and Buffalo, New York, Swedlund taught at the I.D. from 1969 to 1971. He also worked in illustrative and advertising photography and was hired to document many art collections in the city. He then moved to the Carbondale area and enjoyed a 27 year teaching career at Southern Illinois University, retiring in 1999 and where he is professor emeritus. His book, Photography, A Handbook of History, Materials and Processes, has been a standard text in the field for decades and preceded the Upton volume. Swedlund has lectured and exhibited widely. His photographs are in such widespread collections as the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, the Getty, Los Angeles, and the Kyoto Museum of Modern Art, Japan. He has recently been involved in a personal project, Names Without Faces, documenting names left inscribed in the walls of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, from 1815 to 1941.
