BiographyHarriette Meriwether

“My interest in art is traced to my childhood as I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. I watched my mother sew and would collect the scraps to make doll clothing, play-house accessories and embellishments, paying close attention to texture, pattern and color. My work today still reflects these attributes.

“Over the past few years, my most satisfying work has been in creating history quilts that reflect Black heritage. These have provided me a source of inspiration and a visual voice in my art. My work has included story quilts, collage landscapes and mixed media sculpture. all done in African and other culturally enhanced textiles. I also paint in watercolor and acrylic, using both paper and canvas. In my work I aspire to create a visual image that is bold and touches the human emotion in the viewer.

“My art is created in many forms, expressive colors, textures and shapes in traditional and unique designs.”
