The son of the painter Georg Johann Volmar, Joseph Volmar was the pupil of Horace Vernet. He taught painting in Bern and exhibited in Paris in 1824 and 1827. His output consists mainly of lithographs of animals. Some biographers appreciate his portrayals of horses.
