From 1934, Kawano studied at the Kawabata School of Fine Art in Tokyo. In 1944, his works were selected by the Japanese Print Association. From 1944 to 1949 his artistic activity was interrupted when he was deported to Siberia as a prisoner. His style is figurative and his compositions are enhanced by impasto with various substances. From 1952, he exhibited at the National Academy of Painting, winning the Academy's prize in 1954. From 1959 he participated in international collective exhibitions and had several solo exhibitions in the USA.
