David Murray Smith studied at Edinburgh School of Art and at the Royal Scottish Academy School of Painting. At the age of 30 he moved to London. In 1905 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and in 1916 he was elected Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1909 to 1936. Smith painted expansive landscapes dominated by changing skies.
