Jeff Hsu's Art

Chinese, founded 1993
BiographyIn Chinese, the words Jeff Hsu's Art consist of two characters- 'Guan' and 'Xiang'. Guan means to see or to look at. Xiang means what one thinks in one's mind.

Mr. Jeff Hsu believes that when a person holds an antique in one's hands, he or she is projecting the fleeting image of that object in one's mind. Initially, that image does not register very clearly in the head. But after a time of fermentation, that image becomes stronger and clearer, thus born the process of Guan Xiang.

However, in order for Guan Xiang to sustain meaning, one has to possess an innate interest in, or deep feeling towards, the object that is being observed. An analogy may be drawn towards the relationship between lovers- when one cares about that person, his/her image will linger in one's mind day and night. This passion for antiques and works of art is the driving force behind Mr. Hsu's founding of his company.

Jeff Hsu's Art was founded in 1993 by Mr. Jeff Hsu who is still the managing director. Before being drawn to the field of Chinese art, he was a college professor; now, he has accumulated 20 years of experience dealing in Chinese art and antiquities. He has always believed in the business motto- 'Be a friend to collectors, and a consultant to investors'. While striving to raise the standard and awareness of collecting in Taiwan, Mr. Hsu actively cooperated with both local and international collectors and people in the trade to bring in important antique pieces. He often organizes cultural and study tours to important museums, galleries, art fairs and antique fairs. On top of all these, he still finds time to help found the important forum of Taiwan collector 'Ching Wan Society' as well as the Taiwan Antique Dealers' Association.

Museums, collectors and auction houses form the bulk of Jeff Hsu's Art's clientel. For example, the National Palace Museum in Taipei has purchased no less than NT150,000,000 worth of art through Jeff Hsu's Art. Important collectors and clients also include the National History Museum (Taipei), Chang Foundation (Taipei), Science Museum (Taichung), Traditional Arts Center (Yilan), Poly Museum (Beijing), Capital Museum (Beijing), Metropolitan Museum (New York), and T.T. Tsui Tibetan Art Museum (Hong Kong).

Buddhist art, scholar's objects, Chinese painting, bronzes, Tang Sancai (tricolor ware), metalwork and jade are items on which the reputation of Jeff Hsu's Art has been based. Far from being limited to just these categories, the company aims at calling attention to newer areas of collecting for the customers, thus extending the general awareness of what constitute collectible Chinese works of art. Forever finding exquisite pieces from each category, Jeff Hsu's Art has built up an enviable reputation as the premier trading post for Chinese cultural arts. There are four departments within the company- Chinese antiques, modern art, art design, and art marketing. Ideally, each of these departments will become not just an independent entity in the future, but a first rate company in the vast canvas of art businesses.
